箱根
A lakeside torii with distant Fuji at dawn, woodblock print

Hakone (箱根) is a mountain resort town southwest of Tokyo, famous above all for its hot springs and for its views of Mount Fuji across a caldera lake. Close enough for a day trip yet feeling worlds away, it is the classic short escape from the capital: volcanic steam, forested slopes, quiet inns, and a network of scenic little transport lines strung between them.

A pass on the old road

Hakone's history is tied to the road. It stood on the Tōkaidō, the great highway between Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto, at a difficult mountain crossing, and so it became the site of the Hakone Sekisho (関所), a strict government checkpoint that controlled travel along the route during the Edo period, watching especially for weapons entering Edo and for the hostage families of provincial lords trying to leave. A reconstruction of the barrier still stands by the lake, a reminder of the tightly policed peace of those centuries.

The volcanic landscape

Hakone sits in the caldera of an ancient volcano, and the land is still restless. Ōwakudani is a steaming valley of sulphurous vents where, by tradition, eggs boiled black in the hot pools are sold as a lucky snack said to add years to your life. Below lies Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖, Ashinoko), across which, on a clear day, Mount Fuji rises behind the red torii of Hakone Shrine standing in the water. Visitors loop through the area by a chain of little railways, a switchback mountain train, a cable car, a ropeway over the vents, and a boat across the lake. And everywhere are the onsen: Hakone is one of Japan's most beloved hot-spring destinations, its inns built around baths fed by the mountain's own heat.
