Shōji (paper screens)

Shōji (écrans de papier)  ·  shōji

障子
Branch shadows on a paper screen window, woodblock print

Shōji (障子) are the translucent sliding screens of a traditional Japanese room: a delicate wooden lattice covered on one side with white paper, set in grooves so it can slide open and shut. Their great gift is light: shōji do not block a window so much as soften it, filling a room with a pale, even, diffused glow while keeping the world outside gently veiled.

Wood, paper, and light

A shōji is built from a fine grid of thin wooden bars, the kumiko lattice, faced with washi (和紙), traditional Japanese paper. The paper is thin enough to glow when the sun strikes it, turning harsh daylight into a soft wash and casting the shadow-pattern of the lattice across the room. Unlike glass, shōji give light without a clear view, so they offer privacy and brightness at once. They slide rather than swing, taking up no space to open, and can be pushed aside to connect a room to the veranda and garden beyond.

Living with paper walls

Shōji are beautiful but fragile, and caring for them is part of the rhythm of a traditional house. A poked hole or a stain means the panel must be re-papered, a process called harikae, a task once done as a household chore toward the New Year, stripping off the old sheet and pasting on fresh, crisp paper for a clean start to the year. In modern homes shōji are often paired with glass and used more selectively, but their effect is unmistakable, and the soft light through paper remains one of the defining atmospheres of Japanese interior space. They are close cousins of the opaque fusuma, the other great sliding panel of the washitsu.

Idioms & proverbs to carry away

  • 障子 vs : both are sliding panels, but shōji are translucent paper-over-lattice that let light through, while fusuma are opaque solid panels used to fully divide rooms.
  • 障子に目あり (shōji ni me ari): "the shōji has eyes," part of the saying kabe ni mimi ari, shōji ni me ari, "walls have ears, and paper screens have eyes": be careful, someone may always be listening or watching.
